This is my most favourite - yes, fantastic use of English - fabric sclpture. The Phoenix is made from tie-dyed cotton in red, orange, gold, brown and tan. The eyes were made by using glass paint on two plastic, domed buttons sewn under a hand-made, fabric eyelid. I used a collection of false, dyed feathers to exaggerate the fabric crest and the tail.

The phoenix is a - failed - puppet. The mechanism is an elaborate customisation of a model aircraft propulsion system, attached to a polystyrene ball. It can nod and somewhat turn it's head...but that's about it.

Other than that, I'm glad it came together so well and he sits proudly on the head of my bed.

Are you going to make anymore of these? You know you should take a photo of it in the fern garden, for more of a rainforest look ;)

Yeah, I tried that but he wouldn't sit on them. And, knowing me, he'd end up in the pond with Typhoid.
Yeah, next couple days I'm going to do some more dolls. Suggestions?

He rocks! I love the feathers along his crest and I think the tie-dye was a really cool choice of fabric. *nod nod*

The greatest thing about being optimistic is all the people you annoy in the process.
Thanks - though that should be kudos for Mum for steering me away from the plaid, gold and red and to the pretty tie-dye...let's just say my concept of colours back then was...poor.

ah this is awesome! So cute!:D
How long did he (or she) take you to make?

...Even if it isn't his fault, blame `Vlei anyway!
He took me...erm...from concept to finished piece about a wekk but tat wasn't working non-stop, that was doing bits and pieces when I could. The longest part was the mechanism and, oddly, the beak. The stupid thing just wouldn't sit straight!
